Witnesses in war massacres: from the critique of WWI testimonies to WWII holocaust (Shoah) denial
In 2014, Europe commemorated both the 70th anniversary of the landing in Normandy of allied troops and the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WWI. The coincidence of the two dates symbolically illustrated the link between the two World Wars. In this lecture we will pay attention to a specific phenomenon regarding the intertwining of the two mass conflicts: the link between the lack in belief in Nazi atrocities against the Jews of Europe before and after WWII and the rejection of WWI propaganda. In particular we will pay attention to the work of Norton Cru, a French WWI veteran teaching at Williams College in the US. Norton Cru wrote a major study of WWI viewed from the standpoint of the ones who actually fought it. In so doing he rejected many testimonies influenced by propaganda. It has sometimes been implied that his critical view of testimonies laid the ground for the denial of the historical fact of the genocide of the Jews of Europe during WWII. We will see that such an assumption is particularly wrong and actually distracts from the actual damages that propaganda caused by diminishing the ability of intellectuals to believe in reports about atrocities committed by the Nazis.
